Week End Wrap Up March 10

While everyone has sprung forward an entire hour, it’s not quite spring yet. Ten more days of winter until it’s officially spring. The temperature during one of those ten days is supposed to get up into the mid-sixties, welcome to Ohio.

Let’s start with the good stuff

  • March is both American Red Cross month and Developmental Disabilities awareness month. Representatives from both groups met with the Muskingum County Commissioners to give updates on their organizations and request the month be observed in honor of their work across the county.   • Two people were awarded for their dedication to the New Concord community during the New Concord Area Board of Trade banquet on Tuesday. Both Anna Scheid and Derrick Gingerich were recognized for their selfless service to the village. Full story.
  • Letty is a three-year-old Boxer-mix staying at the Muskingum County Dog Warden and Adoption Center. She needs a new home. The sweet pup is affectionate and loves anyone who will give her a little attention. Full story and photos.

Fires

  • At the beginning of the week, the last remaining tenant in 842 Dydren Rd. was given until March 11 to vacate by Judge William Joseph (read that story here). Now, after an accidental house fire on Saturday evening, the last tenant was forced to evacuate a little earlier than expected. Due to smoke damage, the home, which was condemned in January, is even more unlivable. Full story.
  • From March through May, a statewide burn ban is in affect. While it may not seem dry currently due to some soggy forecasts, brush and foliage in the area gets too dry during spring months. Ohio residents are asked to avoid burning during the day and save outdoor fires for after 6 p.m. until June. Full story.
  • A ground-unit of a downtown apartment complex caught fire late Wednesday evening. The couple, who said they were sleeping when the fire started, was able to escape from the apartment unharmed. First story. The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical. Follow up story.
  • Shrivers Pharmacy, in partnership with Crooksville Fire Department, hosted a free smoke detector giveaway on Friday to ensure that all local residents had operational smoke detectors in their homes. The adjusting of the clocks is always a good time to check the batteries in smoke detectors to ensure they’re operational. Full story.

Court corner

  • The Warsaw man accused of the stabbing death of another man on Linden Avenue over the summer pleaded guilty to murder in the Muskingum County Court of Common Pleas Monday morning. Dannie Devoll is awaiting sentencing in the Muskingum County Jail. He is facing life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years. Full story.
  • After taking his case to trial, Anthony Colston was found guilty of conspiracy to trafficking in cocaine and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, both first-degree felonies with major drug offender specifications tied to both charges. Colston is facing up to 22 years in prison. Full story.
  • A New Concord man that allegedly held a gun to his wife head while threatening to shoot her pleaded guilty to kidnapping, disrupting public service and improper handling of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle on Monday. Due to the firearm specification to his kidnapping charge, Albert Jarvis IV is facing at least three years in prison. Full story.
  • A sex offender was sent back to prison for a second time since 2016 for failing to register. Jeffrey Emig is serving 30 months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender for the second time. His status stems from a case out of Hamilton County in 1999. Full story.

On the lookout

  • A Humane Society officer is asking for the public’s help in identifying the owners of a dog that was allegedly left on the side of the road after being let out of a car. A video looks to to show a car pulling up, a dog appearing and chasing after the car after it pulls away. Full story.
  • The Zanesville Police Department is also asking for the community’s assistance in identifying and locating a man that stole merchandise from the local Kay Jewelers. Full story.

A couple of accidents

  • A 19-year-old man was seriously injured in an ATV accident Tuesday evening. Full story.
  • A FedEx driver sustained serious injuries after being involved in an accident that left the person trapped inside the vehicle for over 40 minutes. Full story.
