Daylight Savings, or spring forward, is happening at 2 a.m. Sunday. With the adjustment of the clocks, fire departments and Shrivers Pharmacy are reminding community members to test the batteries in their smoke detectors.

In 2019, the local division of the Red Cross has been called in for assistance in 18 fires within the 13 counties covered in the Southeastern portion of the Ohio Buckeye Region.

In an effort to help the community, Shrivers Pharmacy, based out of Zanesville, is hosting a smoke detector giveaway and education event at the Crooksville location Friday afternoon.

In partnership with the Crooksville Fire Department, Shrivers Pharmacy is giving away 120 smoke detectors to Perry County residents.

Chief Marketing Officer for Shrivers Jessica Sabine said the company is community-based and works to lend a helping hand to local residents.

On Friday, March 8, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., or while supplies last, local residents are invited to Shrivers Pharmacy located at 120 S. Buckeye St. to pick up a free smoke detector and receive instructions from firefighters. Residents with children will also receive a free coloring book provided by the smoke detector manufacturing company.

To provide another incentive to keep homes safe this year, Shrivers Pharmacy locations are having a sale on smoke detectors, as well as batteries for anyone who already has smoke detectors.

Dresden Fire Department Chief Harold Wolford said checking batteries in smoke detectors is very important. While many people have the devices in their homes, residents often forget to change the batteries rendering the detectors useless.

Wolford added that by getting in a routine of checking smoke detector batteries when the times change, residents should always have operational smoke detectors.

For Muskingum County residents in need of a smoke detector, the Zanesville Fire Department, through the ABC Wilson fund, will provide a smoke detector to local residents free of charge.
