Week End Wrap Up March 24

Was it just us or did this week feel longer than normal? Some warm weather is in store for the coming week, and of course, some rain. If the business of the week kept you from the news, here’s the update on the happenings. Let’s dive in.

A couple of good things happened this week

  • Newly reopened Naomi’s House officially opened its doors Friday to curious and supportive community members. The home will be accepting its first three tenants this coming week. Full story.
  • Two local potters are looking to preserve the art and ceramic history in Zanesville by pitching the idea of a ceramics incubator facility for the downtown area. A plan that is in its beginning stages, the couple is leaving the decision in the hands of the community. Full story.
  • Friday’s Furry Friend was adopted shortly following her debut. Luna, a mix of many breeds, was adopted from the Dog Warden and Adoption Center Saturday. Her story, or at least the photos are still worth a look. Full story.

Court corner

  • The man accused of sexually assaulting his girlfriend’s children was sentenced to 23 years in prison. Matthew Stickdorn, 35, is accused of forcefully or threateningly engaging in sexual activity with two individuals under the age of 13. Full story.
  • A trial that ended in the conviction of a man accused of stealing a house adjourned after the jury found Joseph Hodge guilty of 10 felony counts. Hodge is accused of stealing a Roseville home while the house’s true owner was not occupying it due to a boiler issue. Full story. It’s worth the long read.
  • A Taco Bell employee pleaded guilty to 11 felony counts Monday after allegedly photographing a customer’s credit card and using the information to make 10 transactions. Full story.
  • A 50-year-old woman was sentenced to 24 months in prison following the conviction of her fourth OVI charge in less than 10 years. According to her court documents, Tonya Morrison is facing a fifth OVI case that has yet to complete the court process. Full story.

Missing teenager

  • As of Wednesday morning, authorities are searching for missing 17-year-old Demiceo “Kane” Thompson. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a gray Nike hoodie with a black swoosh and tennis shoes. Full story.

A couple of incidents

  • A Zanesville Middle School student was arrested Thursday morning after bringing a handgun to school. Another student reported the gun which prompted a lockdown within the school until the matter was resolved. Full story.
  • An East Fultonham home was damaged Wednesday evening following a house fire. According to Captain Josh Bryan of the Newton Township Fire Department, all occupants were safely outside by the time firefighters arrived on scene around 7:40 p.m. Full story.

Still looking into a jail

  • The county is still looking into options for a new jail. Sheriff Matt Lutz said his ideal timeline for a new, completed facility would have been 2015. Due to increasing overcrowding issues, the need is becoming more and more prevalent for local law enforcement. Full story.
