Jiu-Jitsu academy opens in Zanesville

A new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy has opened in the Colony Square Mall.

Gracie Allegiance Ohio, ran by Professor Jason Cable, will offer students of all ages techniques in practicing the art of Jiu-Jitsu along with fitness, self-defense and living an overall healthy lifestyle.

As part of its grand opening festivities, Clark Gracie, a world-renowned competitor and teacher of Jiu-Jitsu, traveled to Zanesville to met with local students.

Gracie’s grandfather learned the art of Jiu-Jitsu from the Japanese in Brazil and his father was the first to bring the martial art to the United States.

According to Gracie, Cable is a great instructor who is uniquely qualified to help bring the discipline to the Zanesville community.

“I’m excited to see his growth from here,” said Gracie. “He’s already had such great success in the short time he’s been here.”

Cable, who is a 1st-degree blackbelt, said the idea of opening a studio started when he began teaching area law enforcement officers earlier this year.

According to Cable, management at the mall was very helpful and accommodating, making his dream quickly turn into a reality.

The professor, as he’s referred to by his students, will be teaching a majority of the classes, which are designed for a wide range of individuals.

Cable explained that each student studies Jiu-Jitsu for a different reason, some study the art as part of their exercise regimen, others to increase their self-defense skills and some students are interested in pursuing a career in mixed-martial-arts (MMA) or competition.

Regardless, Cable said he enjoys watching his students progress and advance their skills.

Cable’s studio is located in the Zanesville Colony Square Mall near JCPenny’s.

Classes, including those for young children, teens and adults are offered most nights after 5 p.m.

Women’s self-defense classes are held Sundays between noon and 1 p.m.
