Special meeting planned to discuss Main Street buildings Monday evening

There will be a special meeting Monday night to discuss the buildings on Downtown Zanesville’s 600 block of Main Street.
The Public Safety Committee will be convening at 4:35 p.m. in the Council Chambers.
The buildings have long been a safety concern for the City after the back of the contiguous structure began caving in and continue to deteriorate.
On Aug. 30, code enforcement declared the parcels condemned and ordered they be demolished.
During an auditor’s sale two weeks ago, 606 and 608 Main St. were purchased by a private company, ZDT Redux, for a total of $11.
Nate Embrey, who owns ZDT Redux, will be present at the meeting to introduce his plans for PROJECT: RE-MAIN, which seeks to stabilize the buildings and turn them into something viable for Downtown.
“We’re just happy to start the conversation and look forward to cooperating with the city,” said Embrey regarding the meeting.

How long will active and known safety hazards be allowed to exist in Downtown Zanesville? Who will be liable if these building collapse into Main St. while the art community is wringing their hands? Will ZDT Redux be liable even if they have no tangible assets other than the safety hazard riddled buildings that are worth nothing? Will the community allow public funds (tax dollars) to be used to aid development of privately owed properties that directly benefit a few people? Is the city of Zanesville in the property development business? Is the city of Zanesville in the real estate business? Is the city of Zanesville OK with severely hazardous properties existing downtown without closing Main St? Do you feel safe walking on the public sidewalk in front of these buildings? Would you like a green space or micro park downtown instead? Would you like additional parking downtown instead?
