An annual tree lighting event at Genesis Hospital has been canceled this year due to COVID-19 but volunteers are working hard to make sure every tree is still lit and donations continue to be received.

The Tree of Love event brings large crowds each year as all the trees are simultaneously lit and songs are sung by members of the community.

This year however as large gatherings are discouraged, Genesis Volunteers wanted to continue the tradition in a modified fashion, in the spirit of the ceremony’s root purpose to raise funds that benefit the community and to memorialize the loss of loved ones.

While an event won’t be held this year, trees will still be lit and members of the community are encouraged to drive through with their vehicles and observe the campus.

Every item from the bulbs to the poinsettias to the small evergreen trees are sponsored by community members as a tribute to their friends and family members who they would like to honor the life or memory of.

One family has been participating in the event for over 20 years to honor the life of their 5-year-old family member, Sara West, who was murdered in the early 90s.

The girl’s grandmother said that they always request that Sara’s tree be placed by the door so that she can be remembered by everyone who comes and goes from the hospital.

“It’s a nice way to remember her,” said Shirley West. “It’s giving to a good cause that benefits lots of people.”

At the center of attention is a large lit tree with hundreds of bulbs that every year draws visitors from the surrounding region to observe its grand and elegant display.

As reported by Y-City News earlier this year, last year’s donations raised in-part over $8,000 with the funds going to help support Genesis Hospice.

Jerry Nolder, Executive Director of the Genesis HealthCare Foundation, said that he was very glad that the Genesis Volunteers donated a portion of the funds raised from the Tree of Love to support those going through hospice.

This year for a $5 donation a bulb will be lit on the Tree of Love or for a $100 donation an individual tree can be dedicated and lit, each in honor of someone.

The name of the donor and the recipient will also be displayed in the main lobby of the hospital and on the Genesis website.

The deadline to reserve a bulb or tree is Wednesday, November 18 and monetary donations will be accepted through the end of the year.

Those looking to register or donate are encouraged to visit the Genesis website or call Genesis Volunteer Services at (740) 454-4700.
