Food donations are needed to support the Muskingum County Hunger Network during a time when more families than ever are in need of meals.

“With the unemployment that is going on in Muskingum County and the City of Zanesville, you know, we’re trying to take care of our community,” said Zanesville Assistant Fire Chief Doug Hobson, who is helping to organize the food drive. “We’re trying to do, you know, the right thing.”

Through Friday, non-perishable food items and household hygiene products are being collected at Secrest Auditorium from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day.

Donations can be dropped off, curbside at the Fourth Street entrance to Secrest.

All items should be new, unopened and labeled.

“Talking with the Hunger Network, right now, the biggest thing is canned vegetables,” said Hobson.

Businesses are also being challenged to donate by the skid. Already, Sam’s Club and Bimbo Bakeries have joined the cause.

Checks are also being accepted through the Muskingum County Community Foundation’s newly created “Community Cares Fund,” and can be sent to 534 Putnam Ave. in Zanesville.
