Monday the Muskingum County Commissioners declared March ‘Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month’ by proclamation, following a national trend to highlight the ways in which people with and without disabilities come together to form strong, diverse communities.

Trisha Huston spoke with commissioners about how she defies stereotypes by working a part-time job and having an apartment. Huston was joined by staff from the Muskingum County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

“I do what other people can do, just in a different way,” remarked Huston as she began to speak about her employment.

Working with T.J. Maxx for the past eight years, Huston helps take clothing out of boxes, hangs them up and places tags on them.

“I love my job,” said Huston with a smile as she told the commissioners about how she thinks people can do anything if they put their mind to it.

In her free time Huston enjoys participating in the Special Olympics, swimming and track are her favorites. She also enjoys running 5K races with her friend.

Muskingum County ranks in eleventh place in the state for employing those with developmental disabilities.

The County Engineers Office currently employees an individual who assists them with daily tasks.

Commissioner Cindy Cameron recommended the possibility of having someone help shred papers, to which, Commissioner Jim Porter noted that the records department could use the help.

Continuing the recognition of developmental disabilities, this upcoming Thursday the Zanesville Fire Department and the Muskingum Starlight Tigers will compete in a basketball game at Foxfire at 6:30 p.m.
