Increase in flu cases limits visitors at Genesis

By Christine Holmes, News Director

In response to a high volume of local flu cases, Genesis has implemented restrictions for hospital visitors as of Dec. 31.

In order to protect patients and prevent further spread of the flu, visitation has been limited to the following:

  • Individuals ages 18 and older
  • Immediate family members
  • Two visitors per patient
  • Individuals free of flu symptoms, including cough, fever, sore throat, body aches and vomiting

According to Genesis, flu symptoms last three to seven days and typically can be treated at home without seeking medical care.

However, when symptoms persist and emergency warning signs are noted, immediate medical attention through local emergency rooms is needed.

In adults, those emergency warning signs include difficulty breathing, dizziness, chest and abdomen pain or pressure, confusion and vomiting.

For children, warning signs include fast breathing or trouble breathing, fever with a rash, irritability, not waking up or not interacting, blue-like skin color, not drinking enough fluids and the return of a fever or worse cough after flu symptoms seemed to improve.

For those experiencing mild flu symptoms, Genesis suggests following CDC recommendations and calling a physician from home about concerns rather than risking the chance of catching the flu by visiting the hospital.
