Bystanders jumped into action Sunday afternoon to rescue a 26 year-old pregnant woman whose car went into the Muskingum River.

As previously reported by Y-City News, around 3 p.m., Zanesville Police and Fire were called to the intersection of Lee Street and Linden Avenue for reports of a vehicle that had gone into the river near the Y-Bridge.

By the time first responders had arrived on scene, witnesses had intervened and helped rescue the pregnant woman from her vehicle, which was partially submerged in the water.

The woman, who appeared to be uninjured at the scene, was transported by squad to Genesis Hospital where it was discovered she had a broken sternum.

According to Sgt. Alan Etters of the Zanesville Police Department, the woman was traveling on Lee Street when it appears she fell asleep, failed to yield at the stop sign and hit an embankment which caused her vehicle to become airborne. She struck several trees before finally ending up in the Muskingum River.

The 2017 Ford Fusion was partially submerged when firefighters were able to secure the vehicle to a tree to prevent it from further encroachment into the river.
