Speed humps along Center Drive have been removed in preparation for winter weather.

In August, speed humps were installed along Center Drive in an effort to reduce traffic and speed in the area.

The humps have since been removed from the roadway in preparation for more inclement weather, which City of Zanesville Engineer Chip Saunders said was the plan from the beginning.

Prior to the installation of the speed humps, a survey was conducted to collect data regarding how many vehicles were traveling along Center Drive and at what speeds.

Last week, prior to the removal of the humps, another survey was conducted to collect additional data to see how many vehicles use the roadway and at what speeds they were traveling with the speed humps in place.

Saunders said that the data in both instances was collected over a 24-hour time period. Once the data is available, it will be compared to see if there were any differences in traffic patterns between when the speed humps were on the roadway and when they were not.

When looking at the data, Saunders said the organizers of the project are ideally looking for a decrease in both traffic and speed, although he’s unsure of the results the data will produce.

Upon comparing the data, a decision will be made about reinstalling the humps in the spring.

Since the installation of the humps, there has not been much feedback as to whether residents in the area find the humps beneficial or not, Saunders said.

He added that there was a significant amount of feedback and request to do something about the roadway and ultimately it was decided that speed humps, despite the cost, would be a cost effective way to attempt to address the problem.
