A fuel spill at the Maysville Pike Speedway is requiring HAZMAT cleanup as gas leaked into a nearby storm drain.

Fuel has spread up to a mile and a half away from the Maysville Pike Speedway through a storm drain after a fuel tank malfunction left gas flowing out of a busted hose, South Zanesville Fire Chief Russ Taylor said.

The SZFD is working with the Zanesville Fire Department’s HAZMAT Unit, as well as the EPA and the EMA to contain the issue. Containing the spill is first priority before crews begin the clean up process.

Residents in the area are not in danger.

Immediately following the spill, Speedway contacted an environmental service in order to begin the cleanup process prior to authorities being notified, Taylor said. The situation was noticed by the department and crews jumped into action.

While Speedway personnel claims to have called the appropriate line, a report of the spill was allegedly never received.

One southbound lane of Maysville Pike from Sheetz to La Salle Street is obstructed due to the spill.
