A man was taken to the hospital and his dog was rescued after a fire broke out in their Sevall Street home Tuesday morning.

According to Zanesville Fire Department Assistant Chief John Rodman, the department was alerted about the fire around 9 a.m.

When crews arrived on scene, they found the house to be full of smoke but managed to find the dog trapped inside.

Rodman said the only person home at the time was already outside when the fire department arrived.

He was taken to the hospital for minor abrasions sustained while escaping.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but Rodman said it was accidental.

Damages were heavy but limited to the basement, Rodman said.

The dog was taken into a neighbor’s care while its owner was treated for his injuries.
