A man who fired a shot in the vicinity of sheriff’s deputies responding to an altercation in Wayne Township pleaded not guilty to several charges Wednesday afternoon.

According to Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz, just before midnight on April 23, deputies were responding to an ongoing property dispute on Sugargrove Road when they heard shots being fired.

As they got closer, another shot was fired in their direction, but no one was hit.

As a result, 40 year-old Richard Barr was arrested in the incident.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney John Litle said during arraignment a child was in the area at the time.

According to Lutz, Barr was drunk when shooting the gun.

Barr was indicted on a third-degree felony count of having a weapon while under disability, a fifth-degree count of aggravated menacing, a first-degree misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm over a public roadway and a first-degree misdemeanor count of using weapons while intoxicated.

While addressing bond before Judge Mark Fleegle, defense attorney Keith Edwards said his client denies all allegations.

Litle listed off Barr’s history of prior felonies, including cases of felonious assault, assault with a vehicle, tampering with evidence and having a weapon under disability.

Fleegle continued Barr’s bond as set.

Later Wednesday afternoon, Barr was released from the Muskingum County Jail after posting his $200,000 bond in full.
