A 49 year-old woman was taken to Genesis Hospital after jumping from the Y-Bridge into the river below late Friday morning.

According to Zanesville Public Safety Director Keane Toney, the woman first told rescuers she had accidentally slipped but later admitted she jumped to take her life after suffering from depression for two months.

Toney said it is believed the woman jumped from the north side of the Y-Bridge in the direction of the lowhead dam and was swept downstream to the southwest side of the bridge.

Firefighters had to cut through thick brush before reaching the woman.

According to Toney, rescuers were concerned the woman may have injured her back upon impact, potentially hitting rocks in the river.

The woman was taken by Community Ambulance to Genesis Hospital for treatment.
