A Belmont County man faces up to 44 years in prison after jurors in Guernsey County found him guilty of multiple rape charges.

Lawrence A. Hartley is convicted of three first-degree felony counts of rape, four third-degree felony counts of sexual battery and one first-degree felony count of aggravated burglary.

Hartley, 60, was found guilty of raping a woman in her own home after she had returned from a neighbor’s house across the street and went to bed.

According to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, the woman awoke to find a man she did not know sexually assaulting her.

Following an investigation conducted by the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office, it was determined that Hartley was the suspect, and he had also been at the same neighbor’s house.

The prosecution of the case was led by the Special Prosecutions Section of the attorney general’s office.

“Thanks to the partnership and dedicated work of the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office and our Special Prosecutions Section, this victim is getting justice,” said Attorney General Dave Yost in a release. “The members of the jury served and protected their community by returning a verdict of guilty to put this predator behind bars.”

Hartley is scheduled to be sentenced on April 8.
