Zanesville Middle School student arrested after bringing gun to school

By Christine Holmes, News Director

A Zanesville Middle School student was arrested Thursday morning after bringing a handgun to school.

Public Safety Director Keane Toney said another student reported the gun, prompting a lockdown until the matter was resolved.

The student with the gun was escorted to the administrative offices without incident where the student admitted to having a gun on his person.

School resources officers immediately secured the weapon and the student was arrested and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center.

Toney said he applauds the school administrators for responding appropriately and especially the student who brought the gun to their attention for acting responsibly.

In a letter sent home with students, Superintendent Doug Baker told parents “The district applauds the student for the report of this incident and the subsequent implementation of school safety plans by Zanesville City School administrators and the Zanesville City Police Department School Resource Officers. School Resource Officers are stationed at each school building in the Zanesville City Schools District. As always, the safety of students and staff is the top priority of the district.”
