Getaway driver pleads guilty in armed robbery case from May
March 13, 2019
The getaway car driver involved in the armed robbery at Little Caesars changed his plea Monday afternoon.
Cody Belcher, 25, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated robbery with a firearm specification, a first-degree felony, and one amended count of kidnapping.
On May 12, 2018, two people wearing dark clothing and bandanas on their faces went into Little Caesars on Maple Avenue and held four people at gunpoint before receiving money and fleeing from the pizza shop, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Ron Welch said in court.
The men fled on foot toward Military Road. While fleeing, one of the men, later identified as Timothy Tipton, left behind a bandana that connected him to the crime. Once authorities arrested Tipton, they were able to connect the others involved to the robbery, Welch said.
Belcher, who was the driver of the vehicle, did not know that the robbery was taking place according to his defense attorney.
The State, as well as Belcher’s defense, had a joint recommendation that he be sentenced to eight years in prison. Due to his firearm specification, it’s mandatory that Belcher serve three years on that specification alone.
The Co-defendants in this case are:
- Timothy Tipton, 19 years-old — Sentenced to 18 years in prison on Feb. 4.
- Corey Sowers, 22 years-old — Arraigned and pleaded not guilty to all charges on Feb. 1.
- Brianna Dotson, 19 years-old — Arraigned and pleaded not guilty to all charges on Feb. 6.
- Justin Trago 21 years-old — Arraigned and pleaded not guilty to all charges on March 1.
Belcher’s sentencing date has not been scheduled as of the time of publication. His bond was continued at $250,000.
