The City of Zanesville is weighing its options on what to do with the part of Muskingum Avenue also known as Dug Road.

The section along the Muskingum River located between Pine Street and Muddy Misers has been closed entirely for nearly two weeks after a road slip.

Since then, the conditions have worsened, especially in the past few days, Mayor Jeff Tilton said.

When the road first closed on Feb. 14, City Engineer Chip Saunders said there was a chance for further damage.

Several factors, including the current height of the Muskingum River, moisture in the air and recent freezing and thawing of the road, are believed to have caused the slip which Saunders said is common in the winter.

Prior to the road slip, that same stretch of road was already down to one lane. Now it’s the side closest to the river causing problems.

The estimated cost of repair for both lanes in that 2,500 foot road section is around $3 million, Tilton said.

Now, leaders must decide if the cost is in the best interest of the city while also exploring other options.

According to Tilton, the city is waiting to receive word on emergency funding requests through FEMA after county commissioner declared a state of emergency, as well as the city’s request through the Ohio Public Works Commission.

In the meantime, Muskingum Avenue will remain closed indefinitely along the river.
