Update: According to a post from Zanesville City Schools, the district is advising anyone picking up students from both the middle and high schools to wait for buses to clear before driving down Clearview Street, around Sulsberger Stadium and to the back of the building to get students.

Zanesville High School and Faith United Methodist Church’s Head Start preschool are sheltering in place as natural gas was spewing into the air just outside of the high school due to a gas line that was struck Thursday afternoon.

Crews from the Energy Cooperative are assessing the gas leak as the company’s workers were attempting to replace a utility pole along Blue Avenue when they struck a gas line around 1 p.m.

Zanesville Fire Chief Jeff Bell said it’s unclear how large the gas line is, but crews are working to assess and repair the damage.

Zanesville Public Safety Director, Keane Toney, said the workers are claiming the gas line was mis-marked by about three feet.

Toney added that there is no danger to residents in the community, but the fire department is advising those in the area to shelter in place.

The Zanesville Fire Department is making plans for school pick up due to a portion of Blue Avenue being closed due to the leak.
