An unresponsive woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital following a fire that broke out on Grove Avenue Sunday night.

Zanesville Fire Department, with the assistance of South Zanesville Fire Department, responded to the house fire.

According to nearby neighbors, the fire began on a couch located on the back porch. One woman, who neighbors said lives in the room closest to the back porch, relies on an oxygen tank and was trapped inside the home for 15 to 20 minutes after the fire started.

Neighbors also said that the property is rented out to about six or seven people, but the woman was the only person in the home at the time of the fire.

Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Bell could not confirm the neighbors’ details but said that the neighbors had given him that information.

When responders arrived on the scene, the back of the residence was involved in flames and there was a lot of heavy smoke, Bell said.

Bell said the first engine’s responders took a hose to the back of the home while the firefighters on the second engine did a search of the home to find the elderly woman inside.

“We were able to pull her out and she was transported to the hospital,” Bell said.

Three dogs that also lived in the residence escaped the fire through the front door when firefighters arrived, Bell said.

It took firefighters about 10 minutes to put the fire out, Bell said.

Firefighters, nor neighbors, know the cause of the fire at this time. The fire is under investigation by the ZFD.
