Four Guernsey County men have been identified, apprehended and brought to justice following an assault at the Lazy River Lounge on New Year’s Day.

The attack left an unidentified man knocked unconscious and resulted in numerous calls to law enforcement in response to shots being fired by the assailants.

According to Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz, on January 1, 2023, New Year’s Day, shortly after 2 a.m., law enforcement was dispatched to Old River Road in Zanesville, the Lazy River Lounge, to reports of a shooting.

Responding officers located a 37-year-old who had been assaulted and knocked unconscious. They also learned that after the assailants attacked the man, they discharged firearms on the premises. Lutz did not elaborate on where the bullets ended up or how many shots were fired.

It is against Ohio law to bring a firearm inside an establishment where beer or intoxicating liquor is being consumed, a felony offense.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of the lounge, according to Lutz.

Through their investigation, Lutz said, four Guernsey County men were identified, Christopher ‘CJ’ McCall, 23, of Cambridge, Johnathan McCall, 21, of Cambridge, Scottie Minnis, 23, of Cambridge, and Johna McCall, 19, of Pleasant City. All four of which are being held in the Muskingum County Jail.

CJ was taken into custody on Thursday, January 12, at a residence in Guernsey County by members of both county’s respective sheriff’s departments. He is charged with two counts of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, two counts of aggravated riot, one of which is a fourth-degree felony and the other of which is a fifth-degree felony, one count of tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, a fourth-degree felony, and lastly, one count of improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Johnathan turned himself in to the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office and is being held on a $750,000 bond. He is charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony, two counts of felonious assault, both second-degree felonies, two counts of aggravated riot, one of which is a fourth-degree felony and the other of which is a fifth-degree felony, one count of tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony, carrying a concealed weapon, a fourth-degree felony, and lastly, one count of improper handling firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony.

Scottie is facing one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, two counts of aggravated riot, one of which is a fourth-degree felony and the other of which is a fifth-degree felony, one count of tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony, carrying a concealed weapon, a fourth-degree felony, and lastly, one count of improper handling firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Johna is facing one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, two counts of aggravated riot, one of which is a fourth-degree felony and the other of which is a fifth-degree felony, one count of tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony, carrying a concealed weapon, a fourth-degree felony, and lastly, one count of improper handling firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony. He is being held on a $250,000 bond.

All four defendants’ prior criminal histories, if they had any, were not provided. Scottie Minnis and Johna McCall were both arrested and taken into custody on Tuesday, January 17, at a residence in Muskingum County.

Sheriff Lutz said he wanted to publicly thank Guernsey County Sheriff Jeff Paden, his office and his deputies for their assistance in the investigation and apprehension of the four suspects.

Additional details surrounding the assault and the firing of weapons were not provided. The current condition of the 37-year-old man was also not disclosed.
