Teen jumps off Y-Bridge

At approximately 12:30 Thursday morning, the Zanesville Police Department received a called from a person saying a 16-year-old male was threatening to jump off a bridge.

The caller, later identified as the teen’s mother, told the police dispatcher that the boy was traveling by foot, running in front of cars and heading toward the Y-Bridge from West Main Street, according to the call report.

Police attempted to stop the boy, but a comment on the report states that the boy ran away from the officer.

At 12:38 a.m., the caller states that the boy jumped off the Y-Bridge and was in the water below, according to the report.

According to the teen’s mother, he felt trapped when approached by officers and jumped out of fear.

His mother said he landed in very shallow water below and was pulled out by first responders.

According to the Zanesville Fire Department, the teen was taken to Genesis Hospital for medical treatment.

The teen’s mother said he was going through some psychological issues that night and is seeking help. She also said her son was not suicidal, but simply panicked.

His mother also mentioned that her son’s actions that night do not reflect his character, saying he is a very intelligent boy with a bright future ahead of him.

According his mother, the teen is very sore from impact but is otherwise doing ok.
