A busy thoroughfare is closed in downtown Zanesville as crews work to address a water main break.

Water customers in downtown and the surrounding area have been issued a precautionary boil advisory.

Late Monday morning, crews from the city’s water department were notified about a potential water break.

Multiple individuals reported seeing water pour up through the asphalt near the intersection of Main Street and 7th Street in downtown.

The roadway is currently closed to traffic.

Water customers in Downtown Zanesville, as well as those along Wayne Avenue, Putnam Avenue, Moxahala Avenue and Woodlawn Avenue will experience low water pressure.

A precautionary boil advisory has been issued for customers in the affected areas.

Scott Bryant, Zanesville’s Water Division Superintendent, stressed that water not be consumed without first boiling it.

“Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for at least one minute and let it cool before using,” the notice read. “Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.”

Water samples will be collected once the work is completed and service is restored.

An additional notice will be given when the boil advisory is lifted.
