Near the beginning of Wednesday’s afternoon speech by Vice President Mike Pence, the nation’s second most powerful leader made clear his support for law enforcement throughout the country.

The support and the promise, if re-elected, to continue to support police, at a time when officers are facing increased concerns for their safety, drew cheers from the crowd of supporters.

Pence began by speaking about a recent ambush of two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who were shot in their police cruiser late last week.

One a 31-year-old mother, the other a 24-year-old, both recent graduates from the police academy.

The Vice President highlighted the heroic actions of the female deputy, while shot, to tend to her partner.

Video posted to the social media site, Instagram, showed Black bystanders recording and laughing at the shot deputies, choosing not to provide aid and instead shouting demeaning remarks about the police.

Pence denounced the actions of the bystanders and those who attempted to block the ambulances from getting to the hospital while chanting that they hoped both deputies died.

“Men and women that disrespect, and the attacks on those in law enforcement, must stop and they must stop now,” Pence continued.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential nominee, while also denouncing the actions of the assailant, continued course that he believes police budgets should be cut or defunded entirely.

A move that Pence says both the President Donald Trump and he strongly disagrees with.

“We will always stand with the men and women who stand on the thin blue line,” said Pence. “We won’t defund law enforcement, not now, not ever.”

Pence also highlighted the administration’s support of peaceful protest, but the enforcement and arrest of those who “cross the line,” and commit crimes against their community.

As part of that effort, Pence said that over 1,000 federal law enforcement officers have been assisting cities to maintain law and order, making over 2,000 arrests of violent individuals who embed themselves with protesters.

Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz says witnessing the cheering and clapping of the crowd in support of law enforcement was overwhelming.

His deputies, along with members of the Zanesville Police Department (ZPD), the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP) and the Secret Service helped plan and protect Pence as he traveled and spoke in Zanesville Wednesday evening.

As Biden continues to call for severe cuts to law enforcement budgets or their defunding entirely, Lutz said he is very thankful for the administration’s support and the support of the local county commissioners, both past and present, who have always financially provided for the Sheriff’s Department.

Lutz recalled that after the 2016 election Trump had reached out to the national sheriff’s association pledging not only his support but his administration’s continued support of law enforcement across the country.

“It means everything in the world,” Lutz ended as he spoke about having a vice presidential candidate and a community that values and supports his fellow officers.
