As Ohioans head back to work, earlier projections by the state have proven to be wrong. Ohio’s unemployment trust fund won’t run out now until mid-June.

Bret Crow, Communications Director for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, said the trust fund balance as of Thursday, June 4 stood at $104,572,391.72.

Nearly half a billion dollars was paid out during the month of April in unemployment benefits.

Currently, 3,589 individuals are still unemployed in Muskingum County, representing a slight decline from the peak during the week ending April 25.

Individuals throughout Muskingum County still report being unable to get through to unemployment, including some who have yet to receive a single benefit payment.

Governor Mike DeWine told a reporter earlier last month during his daily press conference that he was “very sorry,” and that he apologized for those who have yet to receive benefits.

According to a U.S. Department of Labor report, Ohio was the seventh least solvent of all U.S. states and territories in January to be prepared for an economic downturn.

Last month the state indicated they would borrow money from the U.S. Treasury as they did during the Great Recession to continue paying out claims.

Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted said that almost 95 percent of the Ohio economy was reopened by the end of May.
