Sheriff warns community of scam calls impersonating active deputies and judges

By Jessica Johnston, Assistant News Director

Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz is warning community members of recent scam calls that use the names of current deputies and judges.

Lutz said Wednesday morning that he has been notified of the scam calls that began Tuesday.

He added that the purpose of the scam calls is to get money. While the caller may state they work for the MCSO, Lutz said his department will never call citizens in the community asking them for money.

A similar situation occurred in May 2019 when people were using the name of an active Muskingum County Sheriff Office detective also attempting to obtain money.

According to Lutz, no one was ever linked to the scam.

In addition to asking people for money, the scam call may also tell local citizens that they have active warrants.

Lutz stated that if a person in the area has a warrant, it will be served to them in person and not over the phone.

Due to information about local deputies and judges being public, Lutz said he has no reason to believe that the people making the calls are local to the area.

Anyone with information surrounding the scam calls is encouraged to call the MCSO at 740.455.7134 to submit a tip. Tips may be made anonymously.
