Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz is warning the public of a phone scam impersonating a detective to gain information about local citizens.

According to Lutz, a caller is claiming to be MCSO Det. Sgt. Fred Curry and asking people about subpoenas and criminal matters.

“I just want to make sure that they know that somebody is impersonating a detective, and if they get a call from a detective or Detective Fred Curry, in general, they need to be careful what they’re doing and what information they give and to report it if they have any kind of suspects or anything,” said Lutz.

Lutz said at least three or four instances of the scam have been reported to him from the Coshocton and Licking County Sheriff’s Offices.

Anyone from Muskingum County or surrounding counties who believes they received a call part of the scam should contact the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office at (740) 452-3637.
