Charges likely against Frazeysburg man who hospitalized family on Super Bowl Sunday
February 17, 2020
A Frazeysburg man is facing criminal indictment in Licking County following a crash that has left three hospitalized.
As previously reported, Charles Carter was driving his Subaru Legacy northbound along SR-586 when he went left-of-center striking a Honda Pilot, injuring a family of four earlier this month.
According to Trooper Jason Bell with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, based upon the odor of alcohol and an open container in the vehicle, a search warrant was issued by the Franklin County Municipal Court against Carter to determine if he was under the influence while operating the vehicle.
The results of that test are not available at the time of publication and could take as long as a month to be returned.
Carter had six previous OVI convictions and at least one prior physical control conviction throughout the previous four decades dating back to 1982.
At the time of the crash, Carter had a valid Ohio license and insurance on his vehicle.
Christina Pierce of Mount Vernon, the driver of the Honda, is still hospitalized with fractures to her neck, a broken right ankle, a collapsed lung, and fractured ribs.
Pierce’s front seat passenger, Melissa Popham of Mount Vernon, suffered a shattered right knee and a fractured right thumb.
Popham’s juvenile daughter seated in the back of the vehicle suffered a broken left arm and a concussion, while her juvenile son suffered an abrasion to his shoulder. Both have since been released from the hospital.
Carter has yet to be ticketed or charged following the crash on Super Bowl Sunday.
He remains hospitalized at Grant Hospital in Columbus with broken ribs, a broken right leg, broken ankles, a fractured spine near his neck region, and a concussion.
