A woman and her grandson were treated on the scene of a fire at their apartment Friday afternoon.

According to Zanesville Assistant Fire Chief Doug Hobson, the fire began in an upstairs bedroom of an apartment on Whipple Street.

Firefighters were able to knock the flames down and contain the fire to the bedroom, but the upper floor still sustained heat and smoke damage.

The woman and child home at the time were treated on scene for smoke inhalation.

Hobson said the American Red Cross was called to assist the family.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
