Welcome Weekend comes to an end as Muskies return to classes Monday

Classes have begun at Muskingum University after a weekend full of activities welcoming students back to campus.

The class of 2023 was first to arrive Friday and officially kicked off the academic year with opening convocation in the Anne C. Steele Center.

Families and friends of the incoming class were also invited to attend the ceremony.

“Part of the message to them is that we’re here to take care of your sons and daughters, and they’re going to have a great experience. Hopefully they don’t have to worry as much as we know they’re already going to,” said Steve Soba, Vice President for Enrollment and Marketing. “So we wanted the parents to experience this, and it’s a great way to symbolically kick off the start of the school year.”

There to greet the first year students, as well as transfer students, were leaders from the University and community.

New Chair of the Board of Trustees President Kim Gage Rothermel gave the address, inspiring students to find success at Muskingum.

“If you want to change the world, you are at Muskingum University, you can do that,” said Rothermel.

Mayor Brett Essex invited the new Muskies to explore New Concord and become involved.

“It takes a village, and that’s what we’re here for,” said Essex.

Essex shared different ways for students to become involved as volunteers and interns within the Village.

“I think it’s important for the mayor to come and talk to our students and tell them that they’re welcome on Main Street and that as it continues to grow, students will find wonderful opportunities and resources down there to help their Muskingum experience be the best it can be,” said Soba.

Students wasted no time familiarizing themselves with their new community.

On Saturday, they spent the morning volunteering for various groups throughout the area, both on and off-campus.

“The idea is to have a little fun, but also do a little good,” said Aaron Martin, Director of Strategic Communication and Marketing.

Some of the fun included water slides, inflatables, giant board games, movies, games and entertainment from a hypnotist over the weekend.
