A kayaker that fell over the Ellis Dam was taken to the hospital around 6:30 p.m. after being pulled out of the Muskingum River.

At approximately 5:45 p.m. a fisherman near the dam, located at the Historic Lock and Dam #11, called emergency personnel after witnessing the man tumble over the dam.

“Seen a woman running down this way then I heard a guy holler, ‘Oh my god,’” the fisherman said. “About that time, he came over the dam and couldn’t see him ‘cause of the wall. Finally about 10 minutes later he come floatin’ down the river with his life jacket and about 10 minutes later his [kayak] came down.”

The man said that by the time emergency personnel arrived at the dam, the kayaker had floated down past the railroad bridge.

The woman that was with the kayaker had pulled her boat out of the water before reaching the dam and re-entered the water past the dam.

Captain John Hodges with Falls Township Fire Department said a rescue boat was launched and the victim, as well as the woman that was with him, were located near Terrace Shores in Muskingum Township.

The man’s condition is currently unknown.

Falls Township Fire Department, Dresden Fire and EMS, Washington Township Fire Department, the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio Department of Natural Resources were all on scene.
