Sewer Department Manager, Kenny Beisser, said Zemba Bros crews are anticipated to be on scene repairing the broken sewer line until about 4 p.m. Thursday.

Thursday morning, it was discovered that the East Pike flow meter had a low flow, Beisser said. His department began checking station to see if they were pumping properly.

A break was discovered in the creek bed near Airport Road. The creek was contaminated with sewage.

Beisser said the state EPA was contacted and requested photos to make a decision on whether or not it was necessary to respond to the incident. At the time of publication, Beisser had not heard back from the state EPA.

Beisser met with the Muskingum County Commissioners Thursday morning regarding the sewer line break.

County Commissioner Cindy Cameron said Beisser got crews on scene quickly and went out to the site to assess the damages after their meeting.

After their meeting, Beisser said he was contacting the EPA as incidents have a 24-hour reporting period after discovery.

At the time of their meeting, Cameron said Beisser did not comment on if the sewage had gotten into the creek as he was heading out to the break site following the meeting to assess the situation.

Zemba Bros crew members on scene said a water pump is diverting water from in front of the break to behind the break. Tank trucks are also sucking out any sewage coming through the line.

Due to the emergent nature of the incident, Cameron said the job did not have to be bid out to companies.
