Woman trapped in multiple feet of water after car overturns

By Jessica Johnston, Assistant News Director

A woman driving east on Canal Road lost control of her vehicle causing it to go off the side of the road and overturn into standing water Tuesday evening.

An Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper said the woman drove off the right side of Canal Road and into a drainage ditch with several feet of standing water. The vehicle overturned on its top and the woman was trapped inside.

According to a man who was first on the scene, the water was up to his chest as he attempted to free the driver from her car. The man said he broke open a window to release some of the water until rescuers were able to free her from her seatbelt.

Upon the Frazeysburg Fire Department’s arrival, the woman was freed from her car using mechanical means, the OSP trooper said. She was taken to Genesis Hospital for minor injuries.

Drugs and alcohol did not play a factor in the accident, the trooper said it was merely due to icy road conditions. The woman was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident.
