A semi-truck driver out of San Antonio was killed in a crash on Interstate 70 in Zanesville early Thursday morning.

Zanesville Police say the driver, who is identified as 31 year-old Meb Haile, was heading westbound over the Muskingum River in Zanesville when he collided with another vehicle from out of state just after 2 a.m.

According to Captain Scott Comstock of the ZPD, Haile and his passenger, 25 year-old Awet Mahari, had to be extricated from the cab of the truck hauling a UPS trailer.

Haile was pronounced dead on the scene while Mahari was unharmed.

The driver from Virginia in the second vehicle involved, a Toyota Camry, was not inured in the accident.

About 25 minutes later, a crash involving between 9-11 vehicles happened just east of the initial accident as traffic became more congested in the area.

That crash caused both lanes of the interstate to shut down until mid-morning as crews worked to clear the wreckage.

No one was harmed in the pileup.

Crews from the Zanesville Police Department, Zanesville Fire Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio Department of Transportation and the Muskingum Emergency Management Agency, as well as several area wrecking companies assisted with the crashes.
