Muskingum picks up fifth-set barn-burner win to advance to OAC tournament final

By Nick McWilliams, Sports Director

After one of their best showings of the year against Mount Union, the Muskingum womens volleyball team fought their way to the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament final with a five-set saga against Otterbein.

Recovering from a disastrous showing in the fourth set, the Muskies rallied in the final frame for a 16-14 win, taking the game, 3-2 and eliminating the Cardinals. Thanks to a big night from sophomore Brooke Fatheree with 28 kills and 22 digs from Jessica Cottle, Muskingum gets the chance for their first conference title since 2002.

Picking up victories in the second, third and fifth sets, the Muskies found a way to win despite 25 errors in the match. A pair of 5-0 runs in the second and third, along with a 3-0 run to tie the fifth set at 7-7, proved to be the biggest moments of the night.

Ohio Northern now stands in the way as the final test for Muskingum, who dominated in the two teams regular season meeting, topping the Muskies in three sets. The finals are set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
