Duplex fire sends man to hospital
October 11, 2018
Around 9:50 p.m. Zanesville Fire Department responded to a duplex house fire in the area of Pershing Road and Homewood Avenue.
Zanesville Interim Fire Chief Doug Hobson said the preliminary sources show that the fire resulted from a cooking fire within the home.
The fire was largely in the rear of the home and spread up to the second floor and into the attic. Hobson said his firefighters got a quick knock down of the rear and were able to extinguish the fire.
Both parts of the duplex were affected, but only one resident was living on the bottom floor of the home.
The man was transported to the hospital due to difficulty breathing and potentially anxiety from the situation, Hobson said.
A neighbor told firefighters that the man who lives in the home is a 69-year-old veteran while alerting first responders that the man needed an ambulance.
Red Cross was called in to assist with temporary displacement for the resident, Hobson said.
The power was cut off to the home with Columbia Gas also dispatched to the residence to shut off the gas.
The South Zanesville Fire Department was called in to assist, and Value Care Ambulance was also on the scene.
“I think they got a real good knock down on it,” Hobson said. “These guys always do a great job.”
The fire is still under investigation.
