Lutz: Wednesday night explosive tied to neighbor dispute in Blue Rock

Charges are pending after the Franklin County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad was called into Muskingum County Wednesday afternoon to investigate and eventually detonate a homemade explosive.

Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said the explosive, which is being compared to homemade fireworks, was found planted outside a home in Blue Rock just after 1 p.m. Wednesday.

MCSO K9 Panzer was brought in to check the item and detected the explosives.

Lutz said the man who found the explosive outside his family home on Sugar Grove Road is involved in an ongoing dispute with the person of interest who lives nearby.

Lutz wouldn’t go into detail about the dispute until further interviews are conducted, but he said investigators think it was put there for a reason.

Whether that reason was to scare or to harm is unknown at this time.

“There is a possibility with it having live explosives in it that it was put there to do damage, and that could result in some serious charges,” said Lutz.

According to Lutz, pending charges could range as far as attempted murder depending on what is discovered through the investigation.

However, Lutz did say nothing was ever really in danger.

Authorities searched the home and surrounding property for other possible explosives but found nothing.

The explosive was eventually taken to a secure location in the southwest portion of Muskingum County where it was detonated at 12:18 a.m. by members of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad.
