Weekend Planner Sept. 6 – 9

Fall is on its way, but Ohio still has some warm weather left for the weekend. If the family doesn’t plan to be pool-side for one of the last warm weekends, keep everybody busy with some of the indoor and outdoor events on this weekend’s radar. Thursday, Sept. 6:

  • Lock or Unlock Display– Works by members of the Art Loft from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the John McIntire Library. The works will be on display throughout the month of September in the Carnegie Wing Gallery on the second floor.
  • 73rd Ohio Annual Exhibition at Zanesville Museum of Art from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The exhibition is celebrating the museum’s commitment to recognizing and promoting some of Ohio’s finest artists and artisans.
  • Toddler Story Time at the John McIntire Library from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The program is aimed at 2 to 3.5-year-olds to enhance language skills through stories, songs and activities. For more information contact the Youth Services Desk at the library.
  • Preschool Story Time at the John McIntire Library from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The program is aimed at 3.5-to 5-year-old children to enhance engagement through stories, songs and activities.
  • Display Opening for Lock and Unlock – Works by members of the Art Loft from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the John McIntire Library. The opening will be in the Carnegie Wing Gallery of the library on the second floor.
  • Gather Around the Garden at the John McIntire Library from 6 to 7 p.m. The event is focused on ways the garden and gardening techniques used can be adapted to help plants grow old. The program is free and open to the public. In order to reserve a spot for the event, contact the Reference Desk at 740.453.0391.
  • United Under the Lights Softball Game hosted by United Way of Muskingum, Morgan and Perry Counties at Gant Municipal Stadium starting at 6 p.m. City and County first responders will compete to raise money for United Way’s annual campaign. The gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the event is free, although donations are accepted.

Friday, Sept. 7:

  • The Wilds Sunset Safari Tour at 4:30 p.m. Guests enjoy a buffet-style dinner before boarding a safari vehicle to see the animals up close in their open-range habitats. The tour includes a behind-the-scenes viewing of the property. It’s $75 per person or $70 per person for members. Make your reservation here.
  • Back to School Dance Fundraiser at the Zanesville Civic League Community Center from 5 to 9:30 p.m. It’s $10 per family or $5 per student. Kindergarten through 4th-grade students and family are welcome 5 to 7 p.m. 5 through 8th-grade families and students are welcome from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
  • The Fourth Foot by Foot on the Winding Road A-Z at the ZAAP Gallery from 5 to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Artists compete against one another for a chance to win a variety of monetary prizes totaling $1,000. Prizes and awards will be announced at 9 p.m.
  • Yan Sun Self-Portraits – Paintings Inside Paintings at the Yan Sun Art Museum from 5 to 8 p.m. Viewers can now see how the artist Yan Sun depicts himself throughout significant times in his own life during his self-portrait display that will be available through September.
  • First Friday Art Walk from 5 to 8 p.m. in Downtown Zanesville. from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. First Friday Art Walks take place the first Friday of every month and are hosted by The Artist Colony of Zanesville. People are invited to explore the streets of downtown Zanesville while visiting 35 participating local businesses, galleries and studios.
  • Summer Concert at The Smiling Goat from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. Confederate Railroad will be performing live. Get tickets at www.SmilingGoatSaloon.com or at the bar.

Saturday, Sept. 8:

  • Zanesville Farmer’s Market from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Fairgrounds on Pershing Road.

  • Adoption Event for the Muskingum County Dog Warden and Adoption Center hosted by PetValu from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dogs from the adoption center will be out and about at PetValu looking for new homes.
  • Art Voyagers hosted by the Zanesville Museum of Art from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. This event is for kindergarten through 3rd-grade students interested in exploring history throughout the globe with incorporated art forms.
  • Zombie Barbies Program at the John McIntire Library from 2 to 3 p.m. Teens are invited to come turn Barbies into flesh-eating Zombies during this craft time. The supplies for the event will be provided. Registration is required, so call the Reference Desk at 740.453.0391.

Sunday, Sept. 9:

  • Blue Mass at the St. James Episcopal Church from 4 to 5 p.m. The service will honor first responders in the community for their time and dedication to ensuring the safety of the public. There will also be a memorial for those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
