A Zanesville man is facing 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to an altercation involving two area police officers at a Dresden gas station.

Muskingum County Assistant Prosecutor Ron Welch said Bradley Boyer, 29, assaulted a Dresden police officer while he and another patrolman from Frazeysburg attempted to make an arrest on May 31.

According to Welch, Boyer was a passenger in a vehicle with two other men when they were pulled over for a traffic stop.

After running their information, Welch said officers learned that Boyer had a child support warrant in his name.

Boyer resisted his arrest and began to fight officers to the point of being shocked with a Taser, Welch said.

However, Boyer managed to break the Taser and went after the Dresden officer’s gun, assaulting him in the process.

At that point, Welch said the other men who were in the car with Boyer helped officers restrain Boyer so he could be placed in handcuffs.

Welch said the officers involved in the violent confrontation deserve recognition for showing a great deal of restraint when not only their safety was in jeopardy, but also the safety of the bystanders at the gas station.

“They were fortunate enough to not end up in a position where deadly force was necessary,” said Welch.

Welch said the police officer who was assaulted missed work for a few day due to his injuries but is back on the force.

Boyer was charged with several felonies in the incident and pleaded guilty on Monday to aggravated robbery, assault on a police officer, obstructing official business and vandalism. The aggravated robbery charge against Boyer is a result of his attempt to take an officer’s gun.

According to Welch, Boyer is recommended 10 years in prison in his plea but still awaits official sentencing.

Had Boyer avoided the conflict, Welch said he would have faced time in county jail as a maximum penalty for the outstanding child support warrant, which is not a felony.
