United Way is hoping to hit campaign launch out of the park
August 28, 2018
The local branch of the United Way is teaming up will community members to launch its annual campaign.
On Sept. 6 at 6 p.m., the first pitch will be thrown in the United Under the Lights softball game between the city and county first responders and employees.
In the past, the Zanesville City Police has faced off against the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office in tug-of-war challenges and even softball events for other organizations. This year, the game is fully in support of United Way. Both teams appear to be ready for the challenge.
“We’ve seen the comradery develop but then also seen some smack talk, which is expected, Katie McNeil, Director of Resource Development for United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan Counties, said. “I think both teams are practicing. They’re really looking forward to putting their teams together and coming out and playing for the community.”
First responders may be talking a big game, but the challenge is benefitting community members that may need extra support.
“Our goals are health, education and financial stability,” McNeil said of United Way. “We want people to have access to food. We are really working hard in that fight against food insecurity. We want our youth, our future leaders to reach their fullest potential in school and achieve success.”
The United Way of Muskingum, Morgan and Perry Counties is also working to help people become financially independent in the community.
The county and city team’s financial goal is $2,500 per team for a grand total of $5,000 in donations.
McNeil said that United Way has prided itself on reinvesting 100 percent of its donations back into the community throughout the past few years. The organization has a separate source of revenue to fund operational and overhead costs, allowing for that 100 percent reinvestment.
“Dollar for dollar we can make that impact to achieve those three goals,” McNeil said.
People can donate at the same sponsor locations regardless of which team they support. Sponsorship locations are Donald’s Donuts and Tom’s Ice Cream Bowl. There is a sheriff’s department boot and a police department jar for donations. McNeil encourages people to even donate their spare change to make a difference.
“Any amount makes an impact,” she said. “That dollar or two, in fact, two dollars will feed somebody who’s hungry in our community.”
Donations for both teams will be accepted at the event. Businesses can get involved by holding internal-business fundraisers or donating directly to United Way.
The Gant Municipal Stadium gates will open to the public at 5:30 p.m. The first pitch will be thrown at 6 p.m.
During the game, concession will be available, as well as between-inning entertainment.
