Zanesville vehicular homicide suspect found living in tent
August 19, 2018
The Zanesville man suspected of fleeing the scene of an accident that left a 62 year-old woman dead has been captured.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Derek Weaver, 29, was found living in a tent on Saturday nearly three weeks after the crash that happened on SR 40 at the Licking-Muskingum County border.
OSP said that Weaver was found in a wooded area behind a home in Perry County with his girlfriend. The residents of the home did not tip off OSP. The officers located Weaver due to tracking.
The search was canceled around noon Aug. 18.
Weaver is accused of crossing the center line with his pickup truck and striking a car driven by Cathie Clippinger of Mount Perry.
Clippinger died later in the hospital.
Troopers say Weaver took off on foot and accepted rides offering him medical help along the way, but then fled those vehicles.
Upon Weaver’s capture, he claimed “no injury” from the accident and was not transported to the hospital.
Weaver is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.
At this time, no one has been charged in concealing Weaver’s location, but OSP said that charges from the Licking County Prosecutor will likely be pressed in the future.
Weaver is currently being held in the Licking County Justice Center.
