Band waffles on high demand at fair
August 15, 2018
John Glenn High School band members, watch out! The Blue Devils say the Muskies’ apple pies have nothing on their waffles.
The Zanesville High School Marching Band has been frying up light and crunchy waffles for more than five decades.
A fair favorite, volunteers in the waffle truck say they typically sell around 20,000 waffles each fair week.
Band Director Kelley Ryan has been part of the tradition for more than 40 years.
Ryan said he has seen the waffle stand grow from a tent and a pair of deep fryers, to the popular food truck it is today.
According to Ryan, the tradition began in the 1960s when the fair board first introduced the idea of making waffles to the band. The rest is history.
