A garage fire broke out Thursday afternoon next to the home located on the corner of Fess and Sevall Street.

Ivy Duhamel, a neighbor that lives across the street from the scene, was alerted by her niece to call 9-1-1 when her niece saw the garage smoking. Duhamel called the police as flames broke out in the garage.

“It was going pretty good before we even got here,” Interim Chief Doug Hobson said. “Now they’re just working on hitting the hot spots of the garage and then we’ll go into the investigation stage, dig it out and see if we can get the cause of it.”

The house the detached garage belongs to as well as one house behind the garage and another beside it were all damaged. The home with the detached garage was filled with smoke after the north facing windows broke.

AEP was on the scene to attend to an entry electrical line that had melted off the home. The electric to the home was shut off and the line is under control.

The fire department called in the Red Cross to assist the family while the smoke clears out of the home and the broken windows are boarded up.

The two adults, child, teenager and Pit bull that live in the home all made it out safely. There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The Zanesville Fire Department is currently investing.
