Maysville moves to fully remote learning

By Staff Report

Late Wednesday afternoon Maysville Local Schools announced that due to a multitude of reasons, the district would be moving to fully remote instruction beginning next week.

Superintendent Dr. Ruth Zitnik said she was committed to keeping children in school for as long as possible, but that current circumstances have made the switch necessary.

Like many local districts, Maysville has struggled with both students and staff contracting the Coronavirus, as well as additional individuals being deemed exposed by the Health Department and forced to quarantine for a two-week period.

The strain on resources and personnel ultimately made it infeasible for the district to continue to offer in-person learning.

Zitnik said the situation presented incredible challenges, which made the decision necessary.

Beginning Monday, December 7 all Maysville students will transition to fully remote instruction, with the exception of preschool, for a two-week period.

Zitnik said she hopes the district can return to in-class instruction after the December holidays, with a tentative date set for January 4, 2021.

Devices will be provided to students to assist with access to their remote learning classrooms.

All athletic competitions will be postponed from Sunday, December 6 through Thursday, December 17.

Athletic practices, including archery, will be permitted for middle school and high school students.

Zitnik said that administrators and staff are working diligently to ensure that daily meals will still be provided from its Maysville buses at multiple locations throughout the district.

Mid-East students will continue to be transported from the district’s campus but will need to find transportation to and from Maysville High School.

Latchkey has also been suspended throughout the remote learning period.

All teachers will still report to their classrooms and Zitnik encouraged parents to reach out to their student’s teachers if they have any additional questions about the transition process.
