Event held to support local post office
August 30, 2020
Saturday afternoon a small group of individuals met outside the Zanesville Post Office along Zane St. to show their support for the postal service, while also helping to register voters.
Alaina Swope, Democrat State Representative nominee for Ohio’s 97 House district, helped organize the event which she calls a “Save the Post Office Day of Action.”
The event began at 11 a.m. and lasted for a couple of hours as the group discussed with those passing by about the significant part the United States Postal Service plays in the day-to-day lives of Americans.
The group had also purchased stamps at the post office, a small act, but one they believe plays a part in the financial support of the Federal Postal Service.
Those passing by were encouraged to write postcards to the State’s two U.S. Senators, Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman, in support of funding the postal service and keeping it a public good, denouncing agendas to privatize the agency.
Swope said that while she was there as a candidate, the event was designed to highlight the need to support the Postal Service, which is currently facing fiscal issues amid an election year when many are projected to vote by mail due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The group also had voter registration cards that could be filled out for anyone who happened to not be registered to vote.
Ultimately, Swope says that even if you couldn’t make it out to their event, she encourages everyone to buy stamps and call Senators Brown and Portman to tell them to fund the postal service.
