Muskingum University announces Under Armour deal
June 1, 2018
Muskingum University will have some new threads for the foreseeable future.
An announcement Friday morning unveiled plans for Under Armour to be the outfitter for all Muskie sports. This includes all 21 varsity level athletic teams, such as football, basketball and lacrosse.
In order to fulfill the switch, the university will work with BSN Sports, which is a leader in sports apparel marketing and distribution. The deal is set to kick in in exactly one month on July 1 and is a seven-year deal.
Prior to this agreement, Muskingum had a mishmash of uniforms across a variety of sports, with each group selecting their preferred outfitter.
Director and Assistant Professor of Athletics Communications Tom Caudill said the main goal of the partnership will be to bring some continuity to the university athletic uniforms, as well as attract the eye of incoming recruits.
“It’s something that can certainly excite our student athletes, excite the recruits and alums that now, suddenly, you have a brand that all the teams will be outfitted in and competing in,” he said Friday. “Under Armour is a very household name and I think it has a very good appeal to our student athletes here currently.”
Muskingum Vice President and Athletic Director Steve Brockelbank, as well as the athletics page for the university, had tweeted out some build-up prior to the unveiling. Caudill said the entire plan was set in motion when Brockelbank came in from Miami (OH) University as the new athletic director at the university.
The use of #ProtectTheM has been used for a short period of time at Muskingum, but the introduction of Under Armour as the sole supplier of gear brings a different spin to things, considering the company slogan of Protect This House, according to Caudill.
“We were trying to do a little play on words to put it out there,” he said. “We’ve been using hashtag protect the M (#ProtectTheM) for a couple years here just as a hashtag and it seemed to fit perfectly with the announcement that we’re going to be an Under Armour school now.”
As for gear for students, the university is working with Barnes and Noble, the bookstore on campus, to try and introduce solely Under Armour gear in their store. Caudill anticipates a deal to be done in the near future, with students having the chance to purchase similar gear on campus soon.
The uniforms will be unveiled over time, rather than in a bulk announcement. Fans can expect to see tweets prior to the start of each season for each respective sport, which show the new look.
