Downtown Zanesville bank robber arrested, sentenced to prison Monday

A Malta area man was sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison Monday afternoon in common pleas court for robbing a bank in Downtown Zanesville earlier this year.

Robert Campbell, 23, was charged in late March after robbing the Chase Bank along Main Street on January 24.

As previously reported by Y-City News, Campbell handed the teller a note saying he had a weapon and demanded money.

According to Muskingum County Assistant Prosecutor Ron Welch, Campbell said there were people outside with guns and he would detonate a grenade if they set off the alarm.

The employees handed Campbell $2,369 in cash before he left.

He was later caught when law enforcement investigating a pair of bank robberies in West Virginia and Ohio connected him to the incident in Muskingum County.

Welch set Campbell’s fingerprint was found on a pop can he had discarded before robbing the bank.

He later admitted to the crime.

Judge Kelly Cottrill sentenced Campbell to a minimum of 5 years in prison with a maximum possible sentence of seven and a half years. He will also be ordered to forfeit his 1997 Audi A4 and pay $2,369 in restitution.

Earlier in April, Campbell pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges related to the case, including:

  • Robbery with a forfeiture specification, second-degree felony
  • Making false alarms, third-degree felony
  • Inducing panic, fourth-degree felony
  • Possession of criminal tools, fifth-degree felony
  • Theft, fifth-degree felony

His bond was set at $250,000 prior to sentencing.
