Courts in Muskingum County, City of Zanesville proceeding as usual
March 16, 2020
At this time, courts in Muskingum County are proceeding as originally scheduled.
According to Judge Kelly Cottrill of the Muskingum County Common Pleas Court General Division, criminal cases heard before his and Judge Mark Fleegle’s courts will continue amidst concerns of the coronavirus.
“We’re being as cautious as possible, but man, people still have constitutional rights,” said Cottrill.
Judges are making sure that trial and constitutional rights are still being protected.
“We take that incredibly seriously,” said Cottrill.
However, some changes are being made regarding spectators who enter the courtroom.
Each defendant is now limited to one person with them in the courtroom, which could be someone such as a spouse or parent, Cottrill explained.
Victims are still allowed to attend as usual.
According to Cottrill, anyone entering the court must first be screened for health issues.
Cottrill said he spoke with Judge Andrew Joseph of the Zanesville Municipal Court and Judge Jeffrey Hooper of the Common Pleas Domestic Relations Division, who both said their cases will continue to be heard.
Muskingum County Court is also continuing to hear cases, also with limitations on spectators, according to Clerk Alma Tennent.
Excess public attendance in the courtroom will be eliminated at this time.
Health screenings will also be implemented at the door.
