New York woman electronically steals nearly $20,000 from local business in Zanesville

After stealing $19,900 from a local business’ medical account, a woman from the Bronx went on a trip to Orlando, Florida, bought a car and did some online shopping before she landed in Muskingum County’s court system.

On April 24, officers with the Zanesville Police Department were dispatched to Goss Supply to take a report regarding a theft, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney John Litle said in court.

An employee of Goss Supply was checking finances and noticed that an electronic transfer was made from the account to another account at the Bronx Vault LLC. There was $19,900 missing from the medical account.

The employee informed law enforcement that Goss Supply does not make electronic transfers from that account.

After taking the report, a detective began to investigate the situation.

Litle said the detective discovered the account at the Bronx Vault LLC was connected to a Chase Bank account that was opened by 40 year-old Mahasin Spivey.

That Chase Bank account was opened on Feb. 14 and closed May 1 during 2019.

Spivey used all of the money to purchase a car, order items online from Walmart and take her daughter on a trip to Orlando, Litle said.

Litle added that there was video of Spivey and her daughter in Orlando enjoying their trip.

Due to the time lapse between when the money was stolen from Goss Supply in February and when it was noticed by an employee in April, the time frame for reimbursement due to theft had passed.

Spivey, who had never visited Ohio, pleaded guilty Monday to one third-degree felony count of telecommunication fraud (between $7,500 and $150,000) and one fourth-degree felony count of theft by deception (between $7,500 and $150,000).

Along with her guilty plea, Spivey also agreed to pay $19,900 in restitution.

Her bond, which was reduced to a recognizance bond in December, was continued.
